Alderley Edge Hockey Club, Cheshire

The Project

  • The construction work followed a determined 18-month fundraising programme by the Club to transform their natural grass football pitch into a state of the art full-size synthetic hockey pitch.

  • The project took the form of a ‘design and build’ contract, and in order to satisfy strict planning conditions, the new pitch was designed with careful attention to tree preservation orders, as well as ensuring the existing natural grass cricket and football pitches were retained.

The Works

  • Our Premier 10 National sand-dressed synthetic grass was used for the club’s pitch. Premier 10 National was selected due to its short and dense pile, giving the ball a low and fast bounce, which is ideal for hockey and FIH Approved.

  • A floodlighting system was installed along with a 3m wide spectator viewing area which was constructed at one side of the pitch, complete with a 1.2m high spectator barrier.

The Client

Kelvin Briggs, Hon Secretary and Club’s First Co-Ordinator, who has been instrumental in transforming the Club's 20 year dream of building their own hockey pitch, recently described their new facility as "a little piece of heaven on earth" and comments:

"Thornton Contracts added great value to our own design ideas. They delivered a high quality facility, on time and on budget. The devil is in the detail and the Thornton's team are clearly experts in every aspect of what they do. I would have no hesitation in recommending them to any club, school or local authority looking for expert advice, a quality build and a partnership approach to project management"
