Denby Dale Tennis Club SudsSports sports drainage construction system Denby Dale Tennis Club Facility

A perfect match for Denby Dale Tennis Club

Thornton Sports’ new ‘Classic Match’ tennis surface has recently been installed in conjunction with our patented ‘SudsSports’ system at Denby Dale Tennis Club in Huddersfield.

Designed specifically to simulate the playing characteristics of clay, ‘Classic Match’ was the ideal choice for the resurfacing of 2 tennis courts at Denby Dale. The terracotta artificial surface slows down the ball and provides a high ball bounce, hence providing the club with a high performance, cost-effective and low maintenance alternative to clay. However, being located adjacent to a river which floods periodically, there were additional factors to consider on this project. A system was required that would also provide water management capabilities, and ‘SudsSports’ does just that.

Our ‘SudsSports’ system, which comprises a lightweight plastic sub-base replacement layer, allows shallow attenuation, high infiltration and drainage. Hence it is ideal for sites such as that at Denby Dale Tennis Club, where there is a high risk of flooding. Furthermore, given the lightweight method of construction, no heavy construction plant is required for the installation of the system. This was an added advantage for the project at Denby Dale, due to the site’s access limitations.

Roland Sansom, of Denby Dale Tennis Club comments:

“We’re delighted that Thornton Sports have been able to provide us with the high performance slow-pace surface we require, whilst also minimising any flood risk to the courts. They executed the project excellently, given a very difficult site in terms of access, and the new courts are a pleasure to play on”.

Due to the innovative combination of systems adopted, the resurfacing project has been subject to a watching brief by Sport England, who provided funding for the project. Feedback from this has been excellent, and we look forward to future projects of a similar nature.

Members of Denby Dale Tennis Club recently enjoyed an official opening event for their brand new courts. A number of local Councillors were in attendance along with local MP Simon Reevell and a member of the Huddersfield Common Good Trust. Claire Howe of Kirklees Council was proud to cut the ribbon, having been involved with the project from its early stages.
