A stable footing for Wade Deacon High School

Specialist soil stabilisation works will commence next week at Wade Deacon High School in Widnes.

The school requires a new synthetic sports pitch and multi-use games area, however unfortunately extremely poor ground conditions are present on site. Luckily, due to Thornton Sports, works to provide their new sports facilities can commence.

Soil stabilisation involves adding a lime and cement mixture to poor quality soil to convert it into a stable base on which to construct. The technique has proved effective on a number of similar sites, including projects at Westholme School in Blackburn and Gainsborough Educational Village.

In addition to making the construction process feasible, there are many other potential benefits of soil stabilisation:

Saves Time – lime stabilisation dries up wet clay type sub-soil, enabling work to progress, even in wet conditions.

Saves the Environment – the need to both cart away soil and import in new aggregate is significantly reduced, resulting in less vehicle movements.

Saves Money – as the technique reduces the aggregate depth required, it can prove very cost-effective in locations experiencing high aggregate values. Furthermore, avoidance of the traditional ‘dig and dump’ method reduces the landfill and aggregate taxes incurred.
