Thornton Sports Director appointed Chairman of SAPCA Technical Committee

Bill Pomfret is delighted to have been appointed as Chairman of The Sports and Play Construction Association’s Technical Committee.

The new committee, which meets for the first time today, will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of the key work items in the association’s technical programme. They will also formulate SAPCA’s policies on important technical issues, such as input into the development of British/European Standards, and oversee the annual Technical Meeting and other technical-based member meetings.

Technical matters are at the heart of SAPCA’s liaison with sports governing bodies, funding agencies and other sports organisations. Bill’s extensive experience in the management of a wide variety of sports surfacing projects makes him the ideal individual for this technical role. In addition to Contract Management, Bill is also the Managing Director of Thornton Sports’ synthetic grass manufacturing division, Nordon. The UK-based facility manufactures hundreds of thousands of square metres of synthetic grass every year for the sports and landscaping markets. This has led Bill to also be appointed Chair of SAPCA’s Manufacturers and Suppliers Group, as well as being a member of the main SAPCA board.

A key objective of the Technical Committee will be to encourage research & development within the industry. In addition to the developing of a unique synthetic grass backing system that promotes drainage, Bill has also been instrumental in the patenting of a sustainable drainage system for sports installations.

The new committee is made up of a relatively small number of recognised industry experts, and is supported with participation by colleagues from Sport England and sportscotland. This committee will also work alongside a larger “register of technical experts”. This will enable SAPCA to draw on the industry’s expertise and experience as needed, as well as to continue to consult widely across the membership whenever appropriate, such as when a draft Code of Practice is ready for general comment prior to publication.
