Mile End Park Stadium, London

Mile End Park Stadium, London

The Project

  • Thornton Contracts were delighted to have been offered the opportunity to work with the U.S. Olympic Committee to provide a training venue tailored to their exact requirements for the 2012 Olympic Games.

  • Following an initial meeting with the stadium’s operator Greenwich Leisure Limited, and consultation with both Tower Hamlets Council and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), Thornton Contracts’ design expertise was applied to develop two alternative proposals for refurbishment of the Mile End Park athletics track.

The Works

  • To prepare the existing surface, a moss kill operation was carried out before the track was power-washed using a diesel driven high pressure cold water washer.

  • The existing kerb units were also flushed out prior to the entire track area being over-coated with new red rubber granules in what is known as a ‘floodcoat’ operation.

The Client

The USOC used the track as a training facility in the lead up to London 2012 and once the Games had closed the track was donated back to the City of London as part of the Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Project.

Randall L. Wilber, Senior Sport Physiologist of the United States Olympic Committee comments:

“Having exclusive access to the first-class training facility that Thornton Sports UK installed at Mile End Stadium was a very important factor in the success of USA Track and Field, as evident by the positive feedback we received about the venue from our Olympic athletes and coaches.  The 400-m track, jump/vault areas, and Olympic Stadium-specific throwing circles that Thornton Sports UK installed made our training at Mile End Stadium a very positive experience and allowed USA Track and Field athletes to focus and prepare optimally in their pursuit of Olympic medals.
